Presidency Defends Borno Airstrike Against Atiku's Criticism

The Nigerian Presidency, represented by Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Sundai Dare, condemned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's criticism of a recent military airstrike in Jilli Market, Borno State. Dare described Atiku's comments as misleading and politically motivated, emphasizing that the airstrike was based on intelligence targeting an insurgent stronghold.

He asserted that Jilli Market was not a legitimate civilian marketplace but a logistical hub for terrorist activities linked to Boko Haram and ISWAP. Atiku had earlier condemned the airstrike, calling it a tragic failure that resulted in civilian casualties, with preliminary reports indicating around 40 civilians killed.

The military maintained that the operation adhered to rigorous targeting procedures and aimed to neutralize terrorist threats. The airstrike has sparked controversy due to the civilian impact, raising questions about the balance between military operations and civilian safety.
