Private aircraft grounded after emergency landing on Delta road near Asaba

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has suspended the operating permit of a private aircraft that made an emergency landing on a concrete road near Asaba in Delta State on Wednesday morning before departing without approval from regulators. The plane attempted to touch down at Asaba Airport at approximately 7:43 a.m. local time but executed a missed approach, forcing the pilot to land instead on an unfinished roadway in the Ogwashi-Uku area adjacent to the state capital.

After landing on the road, the aircraft remained on the ground briefly before taking off again at around 11:02 GMT and returning to Lagos without obtaining the necessary clearance from aviation authorities. Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo characterized the incident as a serious breach of both aviation regulations and security protocols.

The four crew members aboard were evacuated safely with no injuries reported. Upon the aircraft's arrival in Lagos, the NCAA immediately grounded it pending the outcome of a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding both the missed approach and the unauthorized departure.

Keyamo stated that the pilot did not notify air traffic control before the aircraft became airborne again from the roadside location. The crew members have been detained as part of the regulatory inquiry.

The incident has triggered fresh security concerns within Nigeria's aviation sector, with authorities emphasizing the irregularity of the flight's conduct throughout the sequence of events. The NCAA has placed the aircraft under regulatory review and is conducting further inquiries into how such a breach of standard operating procedures was permitted to occur.
