Private Jet Lands on Construction Road Near Asaba Airport
On June 10, a Bombardier Challenger 601 aircraft, registered N989BC and operated by VMO Aero Limited, mistakenly landed on a construction road instead of the runway at Asaba Airport. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) disclosed that the aircraft was on a scheduled flight from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos to Asaba Airport when the unusual landing occurred.
The pilot aborted the first approach and attempted to land on Runway 11, believing they were correctly aligned with the airport's approach procedures. However, the aircraft ultimately touched down on a nearby paved construction road.
There were seven people on board, including four crew members and three passengers, and no injuries were reported. Following the unexpected landing, the aircraft was inspected, and damage was detected on the left nose wheel assembly.
NSIB emphasized that their investigation is ongoing and has not yet assigned blame or determined the probable cause of the incident. Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, commented on the incident, indicating that there was no mechanical failure involved.
