Nigeria's National Grid Collapses Third Time in a Month, Experts Urge Infrastructure Investment

Nigeria faced its third national grid collapse in a month, leading to significant electricity disruptions in major cities. The collapse occurred due to voltage disturbances originating from the Gombi transmission substation, affecting power plants like Jebba and Kainji.

The grid instability was quickly addressed, with partial restoration initiated at 11:11 am. Experts, including Odion Wesley Omonfoman, emphasized the importance of infrastructure investments and decentralization of power to enhance grid resilience.

Aliyu Tambuwal, the former Managing Director of TCN, called for serious infrastructure upgrades and power decentralization to prevent future system collapses. The Nigerian Electricity Consumers Advocacy Network (NECAN) highlighted the need for increased infrastructure investment and restructuring in the power sector to address the grid's vulnerabilities.

The government's role in ensuring system stability through strategic measures like maintaining reserve power capacity was also emphasized.
