Kano Ice Block Sellers Face Sales Decline This Ramadan

Ice block sellers in Kano State are experiencing poor sales during the Ramadan period, attributing the slump to unusually cool Harmattan weather, which has decreased the demand for cold drinks typically consumed during iftar. Shuaibu Danyalo, a seller with six years of experience, noted that he has invested heavily but recorded minimal sales this season.

He mentioned that daily electricity costs average N5,000, yet he has only sold two coolers since the fast began. Basiru Namalam, chairman of the ice block sellers, explained that the cooler temperatures have led to a significant drop in sales compared to previous years, where prices for blocks ranged from N50 to N300 during hotter weather.

Halifa Ibrahim acknowledged the situation, stating that they accept it as part of their destiny. Abubakar Muhammad shared that he regretted purchasing ice blocks this year due to health issues exacerbated by the weather, while Hauwa Shu Aibu mentioned she only buys one block daily for her kunun aya drink, citing electricity shortages affecting their business.
