REA Plans Mini-Grids to Enhance Nigeria's Manufacturing

Mr. Abba Aliyu, the Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), addressed the theme of scaling mini-grid solar infrastructure for industrial productivity at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Renewable Energy Outlook Conference.

He emphasized that the integration of mini-grids and solar infrastructure is crucial for boosting manufacturing competitiveness in Nigeria. The focus is on energy for industrial clusters, agricultural processing zones, technology hubs, and commercial centers.

Aliyu stated that the transition to renewable energy is not merely a social service but a vital opportunity for modern economies. He highlighted the importance of getting the energy transition right to expand access to power for industries, support manufacturing, create jobs, and strengthen Nigeria's export position as a clean energy hub.

The REA is also working with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to expand the commercial viability of mini-grid projects, with plans for mini-grids of 5MW and interconnect mini-grids of 10MW.
