REC Attributes Low Kano By-election Turnout to Timing Issues

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Kano stated that the low turnout in the recent by-elections was influenced by several factors, including the timing coinciding with Ramadan and the limited number of candidates and political parties participating. The by-elections were held to fill a vacant seat in the Ungogo constituency of Kano State.

The REC noted that despite the low voter participation, the electoral process was conducted in a calm atmosphere, with no reports of violence or security breaches. The REC commended the citizens for their peaceful behavior during the elections.

Additionally, the REC mentioned that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not receive any formal complaints or accusations regarding the absence of major opposition parties in the by-elections, indicating that the decision for participation lies with the political parties based on their internal primaries and compliance with electoral guidelines.
