Arewa Think Tank Urges Political Reconciliation in Nigeria

The Arewa Think Tank has called on politicians across Nigeria to emulate the reconciliation efforts of Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia and former Governor George Akume. This appeal was made by Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, who emphasized the importance of unity for national stability, especially as the political landscape begins to realign ahead of the 2027 elections.

The reconciliation between Alia and Akume, which ended a nearly three-year political rift within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State, was described as a rare instance of rapprochement that could serve as a model for resolving internal disputes. The formal conclusion of their differences occurred during a high-level meeting at the Government House in Makurdi on May 3, 2026.

The Arewa Think Tank underscored the necessity of dialogue in Nigeria's often fractious political environment, stating that while political disagreements are inevitable in a democracy, the ability to resolve them is crucial for defining effective leadership.
