State Police Recruitment to Focus on Merit and Background

On Thursday, Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate, stated that recruitment into the proposed state police system in Nigeria will strictly adhere to merit, requiring thorough background checks and minimum educational qualifications for prospective officers. Speaking during an interview on the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) in Hausa, he emphasized that the new security outfit would not serve as a dumping ground for unqualified individuals.

Barau highlighted the pervasive impact of insecurity on Nigerian families, citing issues such as banditry and kidnapping that disrupt various sectors, including farming and business. He asserted that establishing state police would bolster efforts to combat crime, restore public confidence, and enhance community security.

Barau called for citizen engagement in supporting security agencies by sharing useful information, framing the fight against insecurity as a collective responsibility. He also addressed concerns regarding the financial feasibility for states to fund their police services, indicating that the proposed legal framework would allow states to make independent decisions on establishing their police forces.
