Rehabilitation of 3rd Mainland Bridge To Gulp N3.6trn – Umahi

Minister of Works, David Umahi, revealed that the rehabilitation of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos will cost approximately N3.6 trillion. The bridge, inaugurated in 1990, has suffered severe damage to its underwater structure, necessitating urgent repair.

Umahi stated that the deterioration was caused by illegal sand mining, erosion, and corrosion. The assessment also showed that the damage was more extensive than previously thought.

The options considered include rehabilitation or complete reconstruction, with the latter estimated to cost slightly less than N3 trillion. Umahi announced that at least seven specialist contractors will be involved in the project, with funding arrangements being explored, including talks with international lenders.

The Federal Executive Council also approved emergency interventions for damaged bridges nationwide. Umahi emphasized the need for significant resources and engineering expertise for the rehabilitation or reconstruction of the Third Mainland Bridge.
