Iran has lifted restrictions on women obtaining motorcycle licenses after years of uncertainty and unofficial barriers. Despite no explicit ban in Iranian law, women faced difficulties in obtaining licenses, leading to legal uncertainties and holding them responsible in accidents.

The new resolution, endorsed by Iran's Cabinet in late January, mandates the formal recognition of women riders by traffic police. The shift in policy comes after widespread protests in Iran, triggered initially by economic hardships and later evolving into nationwide anti-government demonstrations. The move to allow women to ride motorcycles signifies a step towards gender equality and freedom in a country where women face numerous social and legal restrictions, particularly in public spaces.

The decision follows the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman who died in custody after allegedly violating Iran's dress code, sparking protests and demands for greater freedom and an end to discriminatory policies.
