Remembering Innocent Chukwuemeka Chukwuma's Legacy

Innocent Chukwuemeka Chukwuma (1966 – 2021) passed away in April 2021 at the age of 55. He was a significant figure in Nigerian civil society, dedicating his life to reforming the system and mentoring countless young people.

Chukwuma was a direct beneficiary of the vision and spirit of generosity, which he embodied throughout his career. He was a founding member of the CLEEN Foundation in 1998, focusing on documenting abuses by law enforcement agencies and advocating for police reform.

In 2013, he became the first Nigerian to hold the position of regional director for the Ford Foundation in West Africa. His work was recognized when the CLEEN Foundation received the MacArthur Foundation award for creative and effective institutions.

Chukwuma's legacy includes his relentless pursuit of justice and the empowerment of citizens, which was highlighted in tributes from figures like former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. He is remembered for his impactful contributions to Nigeria's civic space and his commitment to social change.
