Tinubu Urges Unity in Benue Amid Alia-Akum Rift

President Bola Tinubu addressed the ongoing power tussle between Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia and Senator George Akum during the Renewed Hope summit held on Tuesday in Abuja. Tinubu urged Akum to reconcile with Alia for the betterment of Benue State, emphasizing the need for unity and development.

The political rift began shortly after Alia assumed office in May 2023 and intensified following parallel ward congresses held on February 18, 2026, which split the APC into factions. Akum, who had previously supported Alia's candidacy, has since become estranged due to disagreements over appointments and party control.

Tinubu's appeal marks a second high-level intervention following a similar request made by Vice President Kashim Shettima on December 28, 2025. The president highlighted the importance of overcoming political divisions for the benefit of the people of Benue and Nigeria as a whole.
