Boko Haram Employs AI for Bomb-Making and Tactics

A report indicates that Boko Haram has adopted artificial intelligence technologies to bolster its terrorist operations, including bomb-making and tactical enhancements. The research, conducted by Antonia Juelich from Cambridge University, reveals that former Boko Haram commanders have utilized multiple AI platforms, such as ChatGPT and Google’s Anthropic, to develop improvised explosive devices and refine their operational tactics.

The report highlights that these insurgents have learned to modify motorcycles for improved performance during attacks, using AI to calculate necessary jump distances and enhance maneuverability. Additionally, the former commanders stated that they could bypass restrictions on AI chatbots to obtain detailed instructions for bomb construction.

OpenAI and Google have policies in place to prevent misuse of their technologies for harmful purposes, but the report suggests that Boko Haram has found ways to circumvent these safeguards.
