ISWAP Acquires 35 Drones to Challenge Nigerian Military

The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has reportedly acquired 35 commercial drones, marking a significant shift in its tactics against Nigerian security forces. This development comes months after the U.S. conducted airstrikes targeting the insurgent group, particularly in Sokoto State, with a warning issued regarding the group's operations along the Nigeria-Niger border.

Security analysts note that ISWAP is evolving beyond ground-based raids to incorporate airborne capabilities, utilizing first-person view (FPV) commercial drones. These drones are modified to carry small explosive payloads, allowing for guided detonations upon impact.

Analysts caution that the access to multiple drones could enable coordinated strikes, similar to drone swarm tactics. The increased deployment of drones by ISWAP and Boko Haram during military assaults has resulted in significant losses for government troops.
