House of Reps Push for Technical Education in Zamfara

The House of Representatives has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing technical education as a vital component for economic development and self-reliance in Nigeria. Rt.

Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas made this declaration during a public hearing on a bill aimed at amending the Federal Technical College in Nasarawa Burkullu, Zamfara State, represented by Hon Abubakar Hassan. Abbas criticized the nation's long-standing focus on certificates over skills, which has led to a mismatch between job availability and skilled workers.

He noted that the global economy now prioritizes skills and problem-solving abilities. The 10th House of Representatives has made skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, and youth empowerment a legislative priority, aligning with the Federal Government’s focus on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

Abbas explained that the proposed bill aims to close a critical skills gap, empowering young Nigerians in Zamfara to pursue various trades. He emphasized that providing skills is a strategy for security, economy, and social stability.

Hon Ibrahim Aliyu Almustapha also highlighted the need for skilled labor in various sectors.
