Reps Committee Rejects FCSC's Inadequate 2026 Budget

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Service Matters, chaired by Sani Umar Bala, has rejected the Federal Civil Service Commission's (FCSC) proposed budget allocation of N2.6 billion for 2026. The committee criticized the allocation as insufficient to cover essential personnel costs, which are estimated at N1.24 billion, and to enable the FCSC to effectively carry out its functions, including recruitment, promotion, and disciplinary control of civil service staff.

Bala highlighted that the inadequate budgetary provisions hinder the FCSC's ability to fulfill its mandate, as established under the 1999 Constitution. The committee's oversight revealed significant gaps in funding, which have led to issues such as fake appointments and the inability to manage personnel costs effectively.

The committee emphasized the need for a revised budget that reflects the FCSC's operational requirements, especially in light of a human resources audit revealing numerous vacancies. The FCSC's leadership, represented by Prof.

Tunji Olaopa, was noted for its efforts to upgrade data management systems, but the lack of adequate funding remains a critical barrier to fulfilling its legal obligations.
