Senate Supports FCC's N6.5bn Budget Amid Underfunding Issues

The Nigerian Senate has expressed its backing for the Federal Character Commission (FCC) in light of its proposed budget of N6.5 billion for the 2026 fiscal year. Hon.

Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, the FCC's chairman, presented the budget proposal, highlighting that insufficient funding limits the Commission's capacity to effectively monitor and enforce compliance across 700 ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs). Ademola Lawrenc, the Commission's spokesman, reiterated that without adequate funding, the FCC cannot ensure fair balance and equal representation in federal appointments and public service appeals.

Allwel Heacho, chairman of the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Intergovernmental Affairs, described the funding gap as a serious setback, asserting that proper funding is essential for the Commission to fulfill its constitutional duties. The Senate Committee committed to supporting the FCC in strengthening its operations and improving accountability across government institutions.
