Reps Launch Probe into Mining Marshals' N2bn Scandal

The House of Representatives has ordered an investigation into the Mining Marshals Corps due to allegations of corruption, particularly concerning over N2 billion discovered in the bank account of a former State Commander. The motion, sponsored by Hon.

Abdulmaleek Danga, was adopted on Wednesday, directing the Committee on Solid Minerals Development to probe the operations, funding, and legal status of the unit. The Mining Marshals Corps was inaugurated on March 21, 2024, to combat illegal mining and protect mining sites, comprising over 2,200 personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Danga raised concerns about the unit's deviation from its mandate, citing instances of harassment of legitimate mineral title holders and inadequate knowledge among personnel. He also highlighted financial misconduct, including the lack of legislative appropriation for operational vehicles.

The committee is tasked with investigating allegations of corrupt enrichment and operational lapses across all states and the Federal Capital Territory.
