Reps Question Accountant-General Over N5.3 Trillion Surplus

The House of Representatives' Public Accounts Committee, chaired by Rep. Bamidel Salam, interrogated the Accountant-General, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, about unremitted operating surpluses from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

The CBN allegedly owes the federal government N5.3 trillion in unremitted surpluses, despite efforts to recover the funds. The committee raised concerns about the N15 billion withdrawn from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) account and the overall non-remittance of revenues, which poses significant challenges to Nigeria's economy.

Rep. Gboyega Isiaka emphasized the need for compliance from agencies like NNPCL, which has been accused of non-cooperation.

The Accountant-General defended the actions taken regarding fund management, stating that funds are only picked after thorough analysis. The ongoing investigation aims to address these financial discrepancies and ensure accountability.
