Reps to Question Accountant General Over Audit Failures

The Nigerian House of Representatives, through its Public Accounts Committee, has expressed serious concerns regarding the conduct of the Accountant General of the Federation, Shamsudeen Babatunde Ogunjimi. The committee criticized Ogunjimi for his repeated failure to honor invitations to provide essential documents necessary for the oversight of public finances.

During a session on Tuesday, July 13, 2026, Committee Chair Bamidel Salam emphasized the importance of the Accountant General's role in maintaining a cooperative relationship with the National Assembly, particularly in managing public funds. Despite several correspondences sent to Ogunjimi's office, he has consistently failed to appear before the committee or adequately respond to requests for critical documents.

This lack of diligence has raised alarms about the preparation of Nigeria's consolidated financial statements and set a poor example for government agencies. The committee reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring compliance with legislative oversight and accountability in public financial management.
