Rotimi Confirms Legal Requirement for Electronic Voting Results

On Tuesday, Hon. Akin Rotimi, the spokesman for the House of Representatives, affirmed the legal requirement for the electronic transmission of election results in Nigeria.

During an interview, he stated that the necessity for explicit provisions regarding this requirement is outlined in the Electoral Act. The House of Representatives experienced a rowdy session as lawmakers clashed over a motion aimed at reversing the passage of the Electoral Act amendment bill from December.

The current version passed by the House differs from the Senate's version, particularly concerning certain provisions. According to the House's standing orders, a committee is required to harmonize positions, which includes members from both the House and the Senate.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has also announced that the electronic transmission of results will be mandatory, clearly stating that results will be transmitted from polling units via the IREV portal.
