House of Reps to Address INEC's 2027 Election Timetable

The House of Representatives is scheduled to convene an emergency sitting on February 17, 2027, to deliberate on issues arising from the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) announcement of the 2027 election timetable. INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, announced that the presidential election is set for February 20, 2027, and the National Assembly elections for March 6, 2027.

This emergency session, as highlighted in a memorandum issued by the Speaker's office, reflects the urgent need for legislative attention to ensure the integrity of Nigeria's democratic process. The session will focus on legislative matters related to the electoral timetable, including a potential amendment to the Electoral Act 2022, which mandates INEC to publish election notices at least 360 days prior to elections.

The House aims to address the implications of the election dates coinciding with Ramadan and to ensure a flexible electoral schedule. Members are advised to prioritize attendance due to the significance of the matters to be discussed.
