The Republicans are exploring a budget reconciliation process that would allow them to bypass Democratic support. This initiative follows a prolonged impasse over funding the Department of Homeland Security, where Democrats withheld support for immigration customs enforcement unless certain reforms are implemented.

Thune described the idea as promising, and discussions are ongoing. Meanwhile, Hawley voiced skepticism about the realism of the proposed measures, warning of a potential standoff as the fiscal year ends in September.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer plans to introduce amendments focusing on economic concerns, arguing that Republicans are struggling politically. Additionally, Senator Ron Johnson is advocating for the "Shutdown Fair Act," which would guarantee wages for government employees during funding lapses.
