Resident Doctors Demand Action from Government to Avoid Strike

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has given the Federal Government a two-week ultimatum to resolve outstanding welfare and professional issues affecting its members or risk industrial action. This ultimatum was part of resolutions from NARD’s 46th Annual General Meeting held on Sunday in Calabar, Cross River State.

NARD expressed concerns over unresolved agreements regarding remuneration, career progression, professional allowances, manpower shortages, and working conditions. NARD National President, Dr Emmanuel Ogar, stated that delays in implementing agreements had become unacceptable.

The association demands an immediate review of remuneration structures, compensation for additional responsibilities due to staff shortages, and the introduction of standardized templates for excess workload compensation. NARD also called for the full implementation of anti-assault measures to protect healthcare workers and urged the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to address factors driving the migration of medical professionals.

The association emphasized the need for improved hospital infrastructure and budgetary allocations to healthcare.
