Windstorm Displaces Hundreds in Sokoto's Gada Town

On May 31, 2026, a windstorm struck Gada Town in Sokoto State, resulting in significant destruction to residential buildings, schools, and community assets. Preliminary assessments indicated that approximately 100 houses were severely affected, with many losing roofs and others suffering partial wall collapses.

The storm displaced numerous families, leaving them without shelter and exposing them to harsh weather conditions, which worsened the humanitarian situation. Local government officials received distress reports from community leaders regarding the extensive damage.

Hon. Bashir Gorau, a member of the House of Representatives for the Gada/Goronyo Federal Constituency, expressed concern over the destruction caused by the storm and called for urgent intervention from relevant government agencies and humanitarian organizations to provide relief materials to affected families.

Alhaji Mustapha Umar, the Director of Relief and Rehabilitation at the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), confirmed that state officials would visit the affected areas to assess the situation and appeal for immediate assistance to alleviate the suffering of the victims.
