Windstorm Destroys Over 1,000 Houses in Niger State

A devastating windstorm has struck Niger State, destroying over 1,000 houses and displacing many residents. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) reported the destruction on Thursday, with Director General Abdullahi Baba Arah identifying affected areas in Mokwa and Bida local government areas.

The agency is collaborating with relevant stakeholders to determine the full extent of the damage and the humanitarian needs of the victims. Preliminary reports indicate significant destruction in communities such as Sawmil, Kpege, Wayata, Kpege Station, Girigi, and others within Mokwa LGA.

Additionally, the windstorm affected Lavun, Katcha, Gbako, and Mariga local government areas, where around 100 houses were reported destroyed in the Durgu community of Bobi ward. NSEMA is currently conducting a detailed assessment to address the needs of those impacted.

This incident follows a previous wind and rainstorm in February that displaced 2,000 residents and damaged 179 houses across three communities in Akoko Edo, Edo State.
