Windstorms Destroy Over 400 Houses in Northern Nigeria

On Saturday and Sunday, severe windstorms and heavy rainfall caused significant destruction across Zamfara, Plateau, and Sokoto states, affecting over 400 houses and schools. In Zamfara State, particularly in Bela Village, 200 houses were destroyed, with Malam Barau describing the incident as the worst disaster the community has ever faced.

The storm resulted in the deaths of 20 people, injuries to at least seven, and the loss of livestock. Families were left homeless, taking shelter in makeshift structures.

Hon. Abdulmalik Zubairu confirmed the incident on Facebook, expressing sympathy for the victims.

The Zamfara State Emergency Management Agency (ZEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) are preparing to assess the damage. In Sokoto State, the windstorm affected Gada Local Government Area, destroying hundreds of houses and public infrastructure, displacing residents, and causing significant loss of property.

Preliminary assessments indicated that 100 houses were severely affected. In Plateau State, 100 houses were also destroyed in Tom Gangar Community, with critical infrastructure damaged.

Local government officials are calling for urgent intervention from government agencies and humanitarian organizations.
