N150m Fine Against PDP BoT Sparks Legal Controversy

On a recent ruling, Justice Salim Ibrahim of the Federal High Court in Abuja awarded a total of N150 million in fines against the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Adolphus Wabara. The fine comprised N140 million for filing a frivolous suit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and an additional N10 million in personal costs against their counsel, Chief Chris Uche (SAN).

The court dismissed the leadership tussle suit, deeming it an "abuse of court process, unmeritorious and lacking in merit." The Wabara-led BoT sought a court order to compel INEC to recognize the PDP interim National Working Committee faction led by Kabiru Turaki. The ruling has sparked significant reactions, raising concerns about access to justice and the potential intimidation of litigants due to the high financial penalties imposed.
