Lagos Ride-Hailing Drivers Strike Over Low Fares

Ride-hailing drivers in Lagos, represented by the Amalgam Union, have initiated a three-day strike beginning Sunday to protest against low fares and deteriorating working conditions in the app-based transport sector. Union spokesperson Steven Iwindoy announced the strike during a press briefing, highlighting the economic challenges drivers face, such as rising fuel costs, vehicle maintenance expenses, and daily living inflation.

The union criticized the fare structure of platforms like Uber, Bolt, Indrive, and Lagrid for not reflecting current economic realities, which has left thousands of drivers struggling to earn a sustainable income despite long working hours. The strike aims to push for urgent reforms, including a review of fare structures, reduction of commission rates, and the introduction of a minimum base fare.

Additionally, the union demands enhanced safety measures, such as an emergency panic button and comprehensive insurance coverage for drivers. The union remains open to dialogue with the Lagos State government and regulatory agencies to address these pressing issues.
