Rivers indigenes move to stop LG poll, drag Tinubu, sole administrator to court

Indigenous people of Rivers State have taken legal action to halt the upcoming local government election scheduled for August 30, 2025. They have filed a suit against President Bola Tinubu, the Rivers State Government, the Sole Administrator of Rivers State Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas, and the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

The plaintiffs argue that the election cannot be conducted during a period of state emergency, as declared by President Tinubu in March 2025. They claim that the emergency situation has not abated and that holding the election would be unconstitutional and void.

The plaintiffs are seeking a court order to stop the election and declare the state of emergency still in effect. They argue that conducting the election under these circumstances would pose a threat to public safety and good governance in Rivers State.
