Rivers indigenes sue FG, RSIEC over planned LG poll

Indigenes of Rivers State have filed a lawsuit against the Federal Government and the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) over the planned local government election. The plaintiffs, including Fredrick Ededeh and Benita Samuel, argue that the state government's decision to fix a date for the election despite the ongoing state of emergency is unlawful.

They claim that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's proclamation of a state emergency in March 2025 is still in effect, posing a clear and present danger to public order and security. The plaintiffs seek a court declaration that the election cannot be lawfully conducted during the emergency period and that any election held within this time frame would be illegal and unconstitutional.

They also demand that the outcome of such an election be set aside. The case is yet to be assigned a judge for hearing.
