NAFDAC Survey Reveals High Sachet Alcohol Consumption Among Nigerian Minors

A recent survey conducted by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in collaboration with Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria revealed that Rivers and Lagos states have the highest rates of sachet and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle alcohol consumption among minors in Nigeria. The survey, which involved 1,788 respondents across six states from June to August 2021, examined the access and frequency of alcohol consumption among minors below 13 years, those aged 13-17 years, and adults above 18 years.

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, emphasized that alcohol abuse remains a significant issue among youth, with easy access to alcohol being a contributing factor.

The survey found that 54.3% of minors obtained alcohol themselves, with nearly half purchasing drinks in sachet or PET bottles. Rivers state recorded the highest rates of sachet (68.0%) and PET bottle (64.5%) consumption, followed by Lagos state.

The survey underscores the urgent need for stricter regulations and public awareness campaigns to curb underage drinking in Nigeria.
