Kunle Afolayan Critiques Nollywood's YouTube Shift

Nigerian filmmaker and actor Kunle Afolayan criticized the trend of Nollywood producers rushing to YouTube as a streaming platform due to the current high dollar-to-naira exchange rate. In an interview with former Minister of Finance Kemi Adeosun on the Nidacity Podcast, Afolayan stated that while YouTube serves as a flexible starting point for filmmakers lacking resources, it cannot match the offerings of major platforms like Netflix and Prime Video.

He noted that filmmakers are attracted to YouTube because, at an exchange rate of ₦1,400 to $1, they can earn approximately $10,000 from 1 million views. However, he warned that if the dollar-to-naira exchange rate were to fall to ₦200, many would abandon YouTube.

Afolayan expressed hope that the exchange rate would decrease.
