Yoruba Films Dominate Cinemas Over Igbo Movies, Says Duru

Actor Francis Duru expressed that Yoruba filmmakers have outperformed their Igbo counterparts in cinema releases and streaming platforms, attributing this success to the early organization and cultural protection by Yoruba producers. He made these comments during an appearance on the Gbam program aired on the Yan Content Factory YouTube channel.

Duru emphasized that Igbo filmmakers should not resent their Yoruba peers but instead reflect on their missed opportunities. He noted the scarcity of Igbo heritage stories on platforms like Netflix, contrasting it with the Yoruba's deliberate efforts to safeguard their narratives.

Duru criticized early Igbo filmmakers for approaching the industry as traders rather than artists, prioritizing quick profits over professionalism. He lamented the underutilization of notable Igbo historical figures and literary works, stating that other regional storytellers have filled this gap.

Duru attributed the nostalgic appeal of older Nollywood films to the discipline and thoroughness of past productions compared to the rushed nature of contemporary filmmaking.
