IWF Selects Moscow for 2030 World Weightlifting Championships

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced that Moscow will host the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships, the first global event in Russia by an Olympic federation since the invasion of Ukraine began in 2022. This decision comes four months after the IWF confirmed that Russian athletes would be eligible to compete in its events.
The IWF also awarded the 2029 senior event to Ahmedabad, India. IWF general secretary Jose Quinones remarked on the quality of the bids received.
The Russian Weightlifting Federation, led by president Aleksandr Vinokurov, expressed gratitude to the IWF for their trust, emphasizing Russia's capability to host top-level competitions. The championships will also serve as a qualifying event for the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane, Australia.
Since the war in Ukraine, no Olympic sport championships have been held in Russia, with the 2025 World Aquatics Championships moved to Singapore. The IOC's provisional lifting of Russia's suspension has led to some Russian athletes competing as neutrals in recent Olympic events.
