Lagos Reintroduces Sanitation Exercise, Upholds Legal Rights

The Lagos State Government has announced the reintroduction of a monthly sanitation exercise, asserting that it complies with legal standards and does not infringe on residents' fundamental rights. Attorney General Lawal Pedro clarified that this decision follows a court ruling from November 23, 2021, which upheld the legality of such exercises.

The court's judgment confirmed that the sanitation activities do not breach individual rights, superseding an earlier 2019 appellate decision. Pedro noted that the current policy does not impose a total restriction on movement but introduces a controlled access system to ensure public health and safety during sanitation hours.

This approach aims to balance public health objectives with individual rights, allowing residents to move freely while temporarily restricting access in areas designated for cleaning. The Lagos State Government remains committed to conducting these exercises within the bounds of the law.
