Lagos State to Reintroduce Monthly Sanitation from April 2026

The Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced the reintroduction of monthly environmental sanitation exercises set to commence on April 25, 2026. This initiative aims to enhance environmental hygiene and reduce flooding while fostering civic culture.

The government emphasizes a balanced approach, seeking public cooperation rather than enforcing strict movement restrictions. The previous sanitation exercises, suspended in November 2016 due to a court ruling declaring mandatory lockdowns unconstitutional, had faced criticism for violating citizens' rights.

Legal practitioners and residents have expressed mixed reactions; some welcome the move as necessary for restoring environmental sanitation, while others fear it may lead to extortion and disruption of business activities. Adetayo Akerel, chairman of the Task Force on Environmental Sanitation, noted that the reintroduction will differ from previous versions, focusing on public enlightenment and systematic waste collection.

Residents like Raymond Olugbenga and Folorunsho Atta shared their views, highlighting the need for improved waste management systems to ensure compliance.
