Divided Eid Prayers in Kano Reflect Political Tensions

On Eid el-Fitr, Kano witnessed a significant division in its traditional political leadership as three prominent figures held separate prayers. Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, led the first prayer at Kofar Mata Eid ground at 8:00 AM, attended by Governor Abba Yusuf and other officials.

His sermon emphasized unity and peace in Kano. Meanwhile, the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, conducted a separate prayer at Nasarawa Palace, focusing on promoting stability and support for the state.

Concurrently, Rabiu Kwankwaso, a notable political leader, held his prayer at a mosque on Miller Road, attended by his loyalists, including Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo. This division reflects ongoing tensions in Kano, particularly stemming from the 2020 emir dispute that resulted in Sanusi's dethronement and Bayero's installation.

The current political landscape is further complicated by Governor Yusuf's defection from the NNPP to the APC, highlighting a significant departure from traditional political structures in the state.
