Sanusi Questions Fairness of Anti-Corruption Drive in El-Rufai Case

Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, has openly challenged the fairness of Nigeria's anti-corruption campaign, directing attention to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai's prolonged detention as a troubling example. On Monday, September 28, Sanusi made these comments in Lagos while attending a book launch focused on Nigerian financial law.
He contended that political ties—rather than evidentiary strength—may ultimately determine how corruption cases are resolved. The Emir recognized that Nigeria possesses legal infrastructure, including courts and specialized institutions meant for corruption prosecutions.
Yet he maintained that merely having statutes is not enough; the bodies tasked with investigating, prosecuting, and deciding such matters must enforce these provisions with consistency and rigour. Sanusi asserted that some defendants facing corruption allegations see their charges withdrawn or dismissed due to their political standing or links to powerful figures, while others are deprived of bail and held awaiting trial.
Sanusi's core argument rests on observing how defendants' political positioning shapes case outcomes. Those lacking connections may endure lengthy pre-trial confinement, whereas individuals with political backing sometimes evade prosecution.
He characterized this pattern as fundamentally undermining Nigeria's anti-corruption system's legitimacy. During an interview with Channels Television, the Emir articulated these views on the margins of 'The Unexplained Wealth Trilogy' launch.
This three-volume work, authored by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Wahab Shittu, examines anti-corruption frameworks and financial law in Nigeria. Sanusi's intervention contributes additional scrutiny regarding the handling of corruption prosecutions within Nigeria's judicial framework.
