Sanwo-Olu Advocates Against Piracy at AMVCA 2026

At the 12th Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards held in Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu called for a united front against piracy in Africa's entertainment industry. He warned that intellectual property theft undermines the economic rewards for creators and discourages investment in the sector.

Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the growing global influence of African film and music but lamented that piracy continues to drain revenue and threaten the long-term sustainability of the creative industry. He stressed the importance of protecting the rights of creators and urged all stakeholders to reject piracy in any form.

The Director General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission, Ijeoma Egbunik, reiterated the need for collective action against copyright abuse, emphasizing that the strongest defense against piracy is cultural respect for copyright work. The event served as a platform to deliver a strong anti-piracy message, reflecting the increasing recognition of copyright protection as essential for the growth of Africa's creative economy.
