Sanwo-Olu Approves Dredging to Combat Lagos Flooding

Following widespread flooding in Lagos due to heavy rainfall, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the immediate dredging and maintenance of 28 additional primary drainage channels across the state. This decision comes after the Environmental Water Resources Commission reported that the unusual intensity of rainfall produced massive volumes of stormwater, overwhelming the drainage systems in several locations.

The flooding has affected areas including Victoria Island, Lekki, Ikeja, Gbagada, Mushin, and Mafoluku. The governor has called for calm among residents and emphasized the need for community support in flood management efforts.

He urged residents to refrain from dumping refuse in drainage channels and to report any activities that obstruct the natural flow of stormwater. The Lagos State Government is committed to monitoring the drainage infrastructure and ensuring that flood-prone areas are adequately addressed.

The recent downpours have sparked frustration among residents, leading to significant disruptions in transportation and business activities.
