14-Year-Old Esther Etiyemonu Becomes One-Day Lagos Governor

On a designated day, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stepped aside as 14-year-old Esther Etiyemonu, the overall winner of the 2025/2026 Lagos State Spell Bee competition, assumed the role of one-day governor. Etiyemonu, a student from Lagos State Senior Model College, Ikorodu, clinched the top prize in the 21st edition of the annual contest, which featured eligible public secondary schools across the state.

The ceremony took place at the State House in Marina, where Sanwo-Olu formally received Etiyemonu, alongside members of his cabinet, including Dorcas Awoyemi, who served as deputy governor, and Jumain Olaid, who assumed the role of secretary to the state government. Etiyemonu praised the Spell Bee initiative as a valuable educational legacy introduced by former Lagos First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.

She commended Sanwo-Olu's administration for notable achievements in education, including teacher recruitment, establishment of technical colleges, and improvements in public school infrastructure. The governor reaffirmed his commitment to investing in education and enhancing the learning environment across Lagos State.
