Kano Protest Demands Release of El-Rufai from Detention

Supporters of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai staged a peaceful protest in Kano State on Monday, expressing their concern over his continued detention without formal charges. The protest was organized by members of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Demonstrators carried placards demanding justice and the immediate release of El-Rufai, emphasizing the need for him to reunite with his family during Ramadan. Al Amin Nuraddeen Amin, a member of the El-Rufai support group, called on the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to either charge him in court or release him immediately, indicating that legal action might be considered against the anti-graft agency if the situation persists.

Usaini Maidawa Gabasawa, the deputy chairman of SDP in Kano State, criticized the security agencies for violating due process, while Musa Sha Aibu Ungoggo, the Kano State chairman of ADC, echoed similar sentiments. El-Rufai was reportedly presented to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on February 16, following an invitation from the agency, and is currently in the custody of the DSS.
