SDP and IPAC Call for Electoral Law Reforms Ahead of 2027

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) held a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where they insisted on the necessity of reviewing Nigeria's electoral laws ahead of the 2027 general elections. The meeting, attended by SDP's former presidential candidate Adewol Adebayo and IPAC's national chairman Yusuf Dantal, focused on strengthening Nigeria's democratic process.

They highlighted the importance of transparency, free, fair, and credible elections, particularly addressing issues related to indirect primaries and mandatory electronic transmission of results. Dantal raised concerns about the current electoral act and urged the President to influence legislative reviews.

Adebayo cautioned political actors against treating the upcoming elections as a mere political victory, emphasizing the need for public confidence in the electoral process. The SDP expressed concern over voter apathy, citing a recent area council poll in the Federal Capital Territory where only seven percent of voters participated, indicating a loss of faith in the electoral system.
