SDP Rejects Coalition, Advocates for Party Alliance Ahead of 2027

The Social Democratic Party (SDP), under the leadership of Prince Adewole Adebayo, has publicly distanced itself from coalition talks with other opposition parties. Adebayo emphasized that the SDP prefers an alliance of parties rather than a coalition, arguing that the path to defeating the ruling party in the 2027 elections does not lie in elite political alliances.

He highlighted the need to mobilize millions of disengaged Nigerian voters, pointing out that a significant portion of registered voters did not participate in the last general elections. Adebayo challenged the widely held belief that a united opposition would enhance electoral chances, stating that coalitions often involve negotiations among political elites rather than addressing the central issue of voter apathy.

He noted that approximately 80 percent of registered voters did not turn out, indicating the necessity for political actors to engage with the larger inactive population rather than merely negotiating power-sharing among themselves.
