SDP Elects New Leaders, Accuses APC of Oppression

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) held a convention in Bauchi State where it elected new officers, including Professor Sadiq Gomb as the newly elected national chairman. The party launched a strong critique against the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of undermining democracy and shrinking the political space for opposition parties.

The SDP declared its readiness to contest the 2027 general elections, with Adewol Adebayo as its consensus presidential candidate. Professor Usman Bugaj, during the convention, warned that the current federal government is using the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as tools to suppress opposition and maintain power.

He drew parallels between the current political climate and the authoritarian regime of former military ruler General Sani Abacha, asserting that attempts to stifle opposition will ultimately fail despite the worsening economic conditions in Nigeria.
