Nigerian Seafarers Essential for Economic Growth

Captain Ladi Olubowale, former Nigerian chapter president of the African Shipowners Association, described Nigerian seafarers as essential participants in the maritime industry, whose skills and expertise are critical for economic growth and international trade. He made these remarks in a document obtained over the weekend, ahead of the 2026 Day of the Seafarer, scheduled for June 25.

This year's theme emphasizes the often-overlooked realities faced by seafarers, who bear significant risks and sacrifices to ensure the global supply chain remains uninterrupted. Olubowale lamented that despite their indispensable role, seafarers often remain among the least visible contributors to economic development.

He noted that Nigeria's maritime future significantly depends on the quality and competence of its maritime workforce, emphasizing that no maritime nation can thrive without strong seafarers. He reiterated that the success of Nigeria's blue economy will depend on developing and retaining indigenous maritime professionals capable of competing on a global scale.
