SELECTIVE HANDLING OF AVIATION SAFETY STANDARDS

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is facing criticism for its selective handling of aviation safety standards, leading to a series of security breaches at airports. The autonomous regulatory agency, empowered by the Civil Aviation Act of 2022, is responsible for overseeing safety regulations and economic aspects of the aviation industry in Nigeria. Despite being a signatory to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which sets global aviation standards, the NCAA has been accused of treating security breaches lightly.

Recent incidents include popular musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, known as Kwam 1, physically blocking a Value Jet aircraft at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. Additionally, three passengers on an Air Peace flight allegedly consumed alcohol and threatened to storm the cockpit, posing a serious safety risk. While the NCAA swiftly punished Kwam 1 and the unruly passengers, concerns remain about the agency's inconsistent enforcement of safety regulations.
