Senate Pushes for Maternal Health Trust Fund in Nigeria

During a policy dialogue in Abuja commemorating International Women's Day, Senator Ireti Kingibe called for the establishment of a Maternal Health Trust Fund to support a free emergency cesarean section program. She emphasized the alarming maternal health situation in Nigeria, where the country contributes nearly 28.5% of global maternal deaths, with approximately 576.1 deaths per 100,000 live births.

Kingibe identified delays in seeking care, reaching facilities, and receiving treatment as critical factors contributing to maternal deaths. She noted that the average cost of an emergency cesarean section in Nigeria ranges from 60,000 to 100,000 Naira, which is unaffordable for many, especially those living below the poverty line.

Mabel Adinya, the founder and executive director of the Adinya Aris Foundation, reiterated the economic implications of maternal deaths, stressing that each death represents a loss of productivity and stability for families and communities. Moji Makanjuola, executive director of the International Society for Media and Public Health, urged media to raise awareness about the need for a free cesarean section program.
